The lack of understanding of the material and the contents of journals is a common issue that complained about by undergraduate students when they begin writing their thesis, dissertation, or final project. They don’t know what they’re writing about, and that’s the problem they need to solve first. Students focus too much on their confusion over choosing a title, rather than deepening their understanding of the topic or material they will discuss. The reason for this is that they limit their thinking to uncertain matters and worry too much about things that are far from the core of their material. The good thing to do is, if a student wants to make it less difficult in their writing process, they should start from what has already become the central topic of their research and discussion rather than go further to something else.

Undergraduate students also usually just start searching for study materials on how to write a thesis at the last minute, when they should already be doing the research. Some of them are even still learning through cheap online courses which they found on social media. But is that relevant? Definitely not. That won’t be enough for you to get your lecture advisor to sign off on your work after just one, two, or even three meetings. But don’t worry! The book titled “Pedoman Penulisan Skripsi Tesis Disertasi” by Otong Setiawan DJ. is an easy solution for students who are either writing a thesis or just learning how to do it. This book guides and helps students write their thesis, dissertation, or final project in a proper and easy manner. And only for you millennial students, you just need to sit for a while on your desk and take your time to read this “spell book”. Uh-huh it isn't a magic spell like witches have yeah, but this book is designed to make writing a thesis, dissertation, or final project easier for students. It presents a structured guide for writing these academic papers with scientific writing techniques, formatting guidelines, and content for every element of an academic paper. Additionally, this book also has the detailed description of what should be known and written in a thesis, dissertation, or final project, accompanied by examples to aid understanding as models. This book will guide you in systematically, comprehensively, cohesively, coherently, logically, and readably writing your thesis, dissertation, or final project.

It was published by Yrama Widya Publishing, located at Permai 28 No. 11, in 2018. The book has dimensions of 15.5 x 24 cm and an ISBN of 978-374-842-6. You can purchase the book “Pedoman Penulisan Skripsi Tesis Disertasi” at your nearest bookstore, online stores, or as an e-book. But don’t worry for students who might have e-money issues, as Mr. Otong Setiawan DJ.'s book will always be available in your library, especially at the UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung library. For an affordable price, you can gain knowledge and insights that are invaluable and not easily found elsewhere.

This book consists of three chapters. Chapter one discusses scientific writing in academic life, emphasizing that a scientific work should contribute to the development of knowledge and address practical problems. It also covers the common challenges students face when writing their thesis, dissertation, or final project, along with ways to overcome these issues. Furthermore, the book provides a broader insight into theses, dissertations, and the ways to fill their contents. Students often struggle to understand the material they have chosen, which can become a significant obstacle in the writing process. In this chapter, Mr. Otong Setiawan DJ. states that the writing of a thesis, dissertation, or final project is not determined by the number of pages: “In writing a thesis, dissertation, and final project, there is no limit on the number of pages; rather, it is about the essence of the substance being researched and the scientific methodology used.” (Otong Setiawan DJ, 2018:3).

Chapter two provides a more detailed discussion about writing a thesis, dissertation, and final project, including pre-research, writing approaches, formats and components, content and scope of components, literature review/theoretical framework, research methods, conclusions and recommendations, bibliography, appendices, and curriculum vitae. In each section, Mr. Otong Setiawan offers definitions, methods, and examples, making it very easy for readers and learners to understand.

Chapter three delves into writing techniques. This chapter is crucial to read and follow so that one can write a thesis according to the proper guidelines and methods, such as punctuation, typing techniques, how to write citations and their sources, page numbering, how to write numbers, abbreviations, bibliography, footnotes, commonly used abbreviations, table formatting, illustration formatting (figures), appendix formatting, and transcription of interviews. In this chapter, the author, Mr. Otong Setiawan, provides methods accompanied by examples of both correct and incorrect practices, allowing readers to identify and learn from their mistakes. They will understand the shortcomings and errors they have encountered in writing their thesis, dissertation, and final project

In my point of few as a reader, although it initially felt heavy and stiff with no illustrations and everything just being text, it has now become quite the opposite. Over time, this book has actually boosted my confidence because every instruction and guideline is explained systematically and comprehensively. It turns out that this book is not as confusing as I thought. I have started to enjoy and become familiar with it, so I highly recommend it to students who are struggling with their thesis writing to use this book as a reference for their academic work. Whenever there is confusion or technical questions about writing, this book serves as a reliable primary reference. Ultimately, this guide not only makes it easier to understand academic writing rules but also trains precision and discipline in producing quality academic work. One of its strengths is providing a clear and organized structure, helping writers understand each stage of writing, from formulating a title to the editing phase. The book also outlines formal guidelines regarding citation rules, grammar, and academic writing style in accordance with academic standards. Thus, Pedoman Penulisan Skripsi Tesis Disertasi becomes an essential tool in ensuring that every academic work meets adequate quality and accountability standards. Some other guidebooks may lack sufficient concrete examples, leaving students to interpret the rules on their own without supporting illustrations or relevant examples, but this book provides numerous examples that readers can easily understand.

Although this book has many advantages, it cannot be denied that there are some shortcomings that readers may experience. One of the main drawbacks is its somewhat stiff and overly formal language, which can be confusing and difficult to digest for students who are not yet accustomed to academic writing styles. However, as students, they should be familiar with the use of standard language, especially the language found in the KBBI (Indonesian Dictionary), because standard language is a daily necessity for students.

Overall, “Pedoman Penulisan Skripsi Tesis Disertasi” by Otong Setiawan DJ. is an important and valuable resource for students navigating the process of writing academic work. Its strengths lie in its clear structure, systematic guidance, and academic standards that help ensure the quality of a good thesis. However, the book does have some weaknesses, such as its overly formal language. Nonetheless, with proper understanding and adjustment, this guide remains an invaluable reference for composing academic work, allowing you to take pride in your thesis, dissertation, or final project.
